Mall Wars – Christmas in Hong Kong!

ImageFestival Walk, Kowloon Tong

Christmas has descended into Hong Kong and of course no Christmas season in Hong Kong is  complete without the not so subtle and discreet competition between retails malls to have the best decorations and visuals. Yes, in Hong Kong, bigger is better and no cost will be spared to outdo the other rival mails, property companies and retailers. The bigger, more creative and cost effective….the better seems to be the mantra for the shopping mall owners and developments. As the chances of snow in Hong Kong are pretty much zero (But you never know), each year, the retail outlets do their best to bring some Christmas and seasonal cheer to Hong Kong….as well as encourage consumers to stay longer and browse in the hectic run up to Christmas. Conversely, the city maybe gearing up to a consumerist and dining frenzy over the next few days but it is good to remember that not everyone in Hong Kong is so fortunate …..street sleepers are feeling the bite of winter and low income workers will see Christmas day as yet another work day in order to provide for their families in the city that has the unheralded statistic as a place that has one of the highest income inequalities in the world.  Whatever your circumstances, keep safe and warm. Merry Christmas!
